Market context
Bitcoin opened Fed week on the back foot. The spot price broke $80,000 on Saturday, triggering more than $200 million in liquidations inside a single hour, per BeInCrypto's markets desk, and the weekend tally climbed above $815 million by Sunday morning, CryptoBriefing reported. Longs ate most of it.
The crypto market cap fell 4. 06% over 24 hours. That is the surface.
Below it, the setup is less tidy than the red candle suggests. Spot BTC ETFs pulled in $731 million last week, the heaviest week since January, and strategic treasury buyers stepped back in after a two-month pause. The BTC-to-gold ratio hit 18.
17, an all-time high, which tells you the bid is defensive rather than speculative. Gold and BTC are both getting bought as hedges against a macro backdrop that looks increasingly fragile heading into the FOMC decision. Michigan's final October survey, released Friday, showed one-year inflation expectations ticking back up, as NewsBTC flagged, which complicates any dovish pivot.
Fed week opens with a market that wants to rally on ETF flow and can't.
Technical setup
The $80,000 handle was the fulcrum and it broke. First reclaim to watch is $83,000, which capped every bounce attempt in the back half of last week. Above that, the structural resistance sits closer to $86,500, the September swing high.
On the downside, loss of $78,400 on a daily close opens air to the 200-day moving average, which sits in the mid-$74,000 zone. The flush cleared a stack of margin that had been building since the ETF inflow spike mid-week, and open interest on Binance perps dropped roughly 11% through the weekend. Clean, in the sense that stops are reset.
