Market context
Ethereum came into Friday's session carrying a week of mixed signals and left it with a 6.5% candle that got the tape's attention. Price tagged $2,626.56 intraday, per Blockchain.News, and ETH's share of total crypto market cap crossed back above 11% for the first time in weeks. That dominance print matters. It's the market voting with real capital that the rotation out of majors into small caps has paused, at least for now.
The institutional flow picture is less clean. Spot ETH ETFs pulled in $144 million on September 18 in a single-day surge, CryptoBriefing reported, and Bitcoin funds added $433 million the same day. Zoom out one week and the picture inverts: BeInCrypto's tally has ETH products posting a $140 million outflow across the week ending September 18, the only major outflow in a basket of 14 crypto ETFs. Zcash spot funds, of all things, led with $98.2 million in. A one-day inflow after a losing week is a start, not a trend.
The entity backdrop is doing some of the lifting. Paxos launched USDG natively on Mantle, extending stablecoin issuance onto Ethereum's L2 stack. Tron's USDT TVL crossed $28 billion, a reminder that the stablecoin story is not Ethereum-exclusive. And the market absorbed the news that stolen bitcoin from the Parked Coldcard hack was bridged into ETH, a headline that reads bearish for security narratives but bullish for ETH's role as the settlement layer of choice for illicit flows and the analytics firms that chase them.
Technical setup
ETH is trading above its upper Bollinger Band on the daily, which historically caps rallies within a session or two absent a fresh catalyst. Blockchain.News flagged a dead-flat MACD histogram alongside the price push, meaning momentum isn't confirming the move. That's the classic setup where price runs, indicators refuse to follow, and the next 72 hours decide whether buyers force a continuation or sellers fade the extension.
