What happened
Coinbase confirmed Thursday it is dropping the standard sell-side earnings call format for its upcoming quarterly report, according to Crypto Briefing. In its place, chief executive Brian Armstrong and chief financial officer Alesia Haas will field questions live on X, with the thread open to retail shareholders, institutional analysts, and journalists at the same time. The company has not published a full agenda, but the AMA will replace, not supplement, the scripted call that has anchored Coinbase's investor communications since its 2021 direct listing.
The move lands during a stretch when Coinbase stock has traded closely with spot bitcoin, and when the exchange has been public about wanting to court a broader shareholder base beyond the Wall Street funds that usually dominate the Q&A queue.
Why it matters
Earnings calls are a legal artifact as much as a communications one. Regulation FD, adopted by the SEC in 2000, requires public companies to disclose material information to all investors at the same time. The standard workaround is a scheduled call with a dial-in, a webcast, and a transcript.
Moving that into an X thread is not obviously non-compliant, but it puts the disclosure into a format that gets reordered by an algorithm and edited or deleted by the platform. It also gives retail holders the same seat as a Goldman analyst, which is the point. Coinbase has spent years arguing that the crypto shareholder base looks nothing like a legacy financial's, and this is the first time a US-listed exchange has structured its IR calendar around that claim.
Market impact
There is no immediate token move to track here. Coinbase is a stock story, not a coin story, and COIN trades on Nasdaq. The read-through is second-order.
If the AMA lands cleanly, expect other crypto-native listed names, Robinhood, Marathon Digital, Riot Platforms, Galaxy Digital, to at least test the format for supplementary Q&A. The bear case is messier. A live thread invites price-sensitive questions the CFO cannot legally answer on the fly, and every non-answer becomes a screenshot.
