What happened
Freedom Factory introduced the PQ1 on Thursday, a hardware wallet the company describes as quantum-resistant and fully open-source, according to a report published by CryptoBriefing. The launch bundles two pitches into one product. The first is post-quantum cryptography on the signing side, aimed at a threat that isn't operational yet but that regulators and standards bodies have started to plan around. The second is an AI verification tool the company is promoting alongside the device. That tool is meant to let a non-technical user check that the firmware running on their PQ1 matches the source code Freedom Factory has published, without needing to read the code themselves.
The combination is unusual. Hardware wallets have traditionally leaned on either a closed-source security-by-obscurity model, the approach Ledger has defended for years, or on open-source firmware that in practice only a small handful of researchers ever actually reads. Freedom Factory is arguing that AI-assisted review closes the second gap. If a user can point a verifier at their device and get a plain-language answer on whether the binary matches the repo, the open-source claim stops being theoretical.
Why it matters
The trust problem in hardware wallets isn't hypothetical. Ledger's May 2023 announcement of Ledger Recover, a seed-phrase backup service, triggered a backlash precisely because users had assumed the device could not export key material and the closed firmware made that assumption unverifiable. Trezor, GridPlus, and a handful of smaller vendors have leaned into open-source firmware since, but reproducibility - the ability for a user to confirm the binary on their device came from the public code - has stayed a niche exercise.
