What happened
KelpDAO, the liquid restaking protocol behind rsETH, filed a lawsuit against LayerZero Labs and its chief executive Bryan Pellegrino on Thursday, tied to a $292 million exploit of its cross-chain bridge. CoinTelegraph first reported the filing. According to the complaint, KelpDAO says LayerZero reviewed and endorsed the bridge configuration before the incident, a claim that shifts the framing from a routine post-hack finger-point to a direct dispute over pre-deployment sign-off.
Pellegrino responded publicly, calling the suit meritless and rejecting the characterization of LayerZero's role. The precise venue, causes of action, and dollar figures beyond the $292 million loss will come into focus once the docket is public. What is already clear is that both sides are treating this as a case about responsibility, not just a technical failure.
Why it matters
Bridge exploits have cost the industry billions since 2022, but the standard playbook has been quiet settlements, insurance-fund payouts, or a governance vote and a move on. This one is different. A restaking protocol is taking a foundational messaging layer to court and naming its CEO.
If KelpDAO can establish that LayerZero's endorsement carried legal weight, every messaging protocol that has ever consulted on a partner integration inherits new exposure. It also matters for restaking specifically. rsETH sits inside a stack of leverage - EigenLayer restaking, LRT wrappers, DeFi collateral - where a $292 million hole propagates in ways a single-chain loss does not.
The lawsuit is the second shoe. The first was the exploit itself.
