What happened
Meta's Muse AI application ranked first among free iPhone apps on the US App Store on Tuesday, September 22, according to Apple's public charts cited by CryptoBriefing. ChatGPT, the OpenAI product that has dominated the top slot on and off since it broke onto the store in early 2023, slid to the No. 2 position.
Muse launched on September 3 as a standalone consumer app, built on Meta's Llama 4 model family and bundled with cross-app hooks into Instagram Direct, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The app is free with an optional Muse Pro tier at $9. 99 per month, undercutting ChatGPT Plus by roughly half.
Meta has not disclosed download counts, but chart position on the US App Store is calculated on velocity, not just raw installs, meaning the climb happened quickly. CryptoBriefing first flagged the ranking shift on Tuesday afternoon.
Why it matters
ChatGPT's dominance of consumer AI has been the defining assumption of the sector for almost three years. OpenAI built a moat on brand recognition, first-mover advantage, and a paid tier that reportedly clears $3. 4B in annualized revenue.
Muse breaking that grip, even for a day, forces a rewrite of the competitive map. Meta's edge isn't the model. It's distribution.
Roughly 3. 4 billion people use at least one Meta app monthly, per the company's Q2 2026 disclosure, and Muse lives inside those surfaces. OpenAI has to convince users to download a separate app.
Meta doesn't. That structural advantage is what investors and rivals have been bracing for since Mark Zuckerberg promised in January that AI would be Meta's largest capex line by 2027. Tuesday is the first hard evidence it's showing up in consumer behavior.
