What happened
OpenAI and Anthropic are scouting sites in the UK and the Nordics for AI training clusters in the 20 to 30 megawatt range, CryptoBriefing reported on Friday. The publication framed the move as an expansion effort, with both labs looking beyond their existing US and Middle Eastern footprints. A 25 MW facility, at the midpoint of the disclosed range, can support roughly 15,000 to 20,000 high-end GPUs depending on rack density and cooling design.
That is not a hyperscale campus in the Stargate sense, but it is enough to run a full training job on a frontier model or a serious inference fleet. The Nordic angle matters because Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland already host a chunk of Europe's crypto mining base and a growing slice of hyperscaler capacity, drawn by cheap hydro and grid headroom the UK simply does not have south of Scotland.
Why it matters
The scouting news lands in the middle of a compute crunch that has been the single biggest driver of AI-adjacent token flows for the past two quarters. Every incremental megawatt OpenAI or Anthropic locks up is a megawatt not available to a competing hyperscaler, a sovereign AI project, or a bitcoin miner looking to pivot into hosting. The UK grid connection queue runs into the 2030s in most regions, so any serious 20-30 MW site will almost certainly be a repurposed industrial location with existing capacity or a colocation deal with an operator that already has interconnection.
That dynamic is exactly what pushed IREN, Core Scientific, and Hut 8 into HPC hosting deals over the past 18 months. The headline is about AI. The subtext is about power, and power is what crypto has been paying for since 2017.
