What happened
Polymarket has investigated dozens of bets placed on 2026 U.S. midterm election contracts, with at least two cases sent to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the company's new head of investigations said in comments reported by Decrypt on Tuesday. The investigator, who joined Polymarket earlier this year to build out its market-integrity function, told Decrypt the platform's in-house surveillance system flags hundreds of alerts a day across its full contract book, with a sharp pickup in activity around congressional races and state-level outcomes.
The cases referred to the CFTC involve suspected coordinated betting activity, according to the report. Polymarket did not disclose which specific contracts triggered the escalations or whether any accounts have been suspended. The firm's surveillance stack combines on-chain wallet clustering, behavioral analytics on trading patterns, and off-chain KYC data collected under its U.S. compliance framework.
Why it matters
Prediction markets have spent the better part of two years fighting for the right to list event contracts on U.S. political outcomes, and Polymarket's willingness to publicize its own enforcement work is a direct answer to the critique that the venues can't police themselves. The CFTC spent 2024 and 2025 tangling with Kalshi over election contracts, with federal courts ultimately siding with the exchange. Polymarket re-entered the U.S. market in 2025 through its acquisition of QCX, a CFTC-registered designated contract market, after settling an earlier enforcement action.
The disclosure matters because midterm cycles historically draw the heaviest retail flows into political prediction markets outside of a presidential year. 2022 midterm contracts on Polymarket cleared hundreds of millions of dollars in notional volume on the offshore version of the platform. A clean election cycle, with visible referrals and no post-hoc scandal, is the single most load-bearing thing standing between prediction markets and durable U.S. regulatory acceptance.
