What happened
Raiffeisen Bank International lifted its holding in Strategy Inc. by roughly 3,080% versus the prior reporting period, CryptoBriefing reported Wednesday, citing recent disclosure filings. Strategy, run by executive chairman Michael Saylor, is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, with its treasury strategy financed via a rolling mix of convertible notes, preferred shares, and at-the-market equity raises.
RBI is Austria's second-largest bank by assets and one of the most systemically important lenders across Central and Eastern Europe, with a footprint stretching from Vienna to Bucharest, Kyiv, and Prague. A 3,080% jump is not a rounding error. It's a deliberate build.
The bank did not publish a standalone statement on the position and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Why it matters
European banks have spent most of the current cycle circling Bitcoin from a distance. Direct spot custody is capital-intensive under the Basel Committee's crypto framework, which slaps a 1,250% risk weight on unhedged Group 2 crypto exposures. Holding MSTR shares avoids that treatment because the equity sits in the trading or banking book like any other listed stock.
That is the trade RBI just scaled up. It's why a bank buys Strategy instead of buying coins. The size of the move also matters.
A 3,080% increase from a small base is still noise, but a 3,080% increase from an already-disclosed position is a signal that a risk committee, not a rogue desk, approved the exposure. RBI's move follows disclosed MSTR positions from other EU banks earlier this year and lands in the same window as continued spot Bitcoin ETF inflows into US-listed products from BlackRock, Fidelity, and Ark.
