What happened
Moody's Investors Service issued an investment-grade rating to Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin on Wednesday, according to U. Today's reporting of the action. It's the first time the agency has published a credit opinion of that tier on a dollar-pegged stablecoin, and the first time Ripple has carried a Moody's grade on a product it issues directly rather than through a bank partner.
The rating covers RLUSD's reserve structure, which Ripple has disclosed as cash, short-dated U. S. Treasuries, and overnight repo, held with regulated custodians under New York Department of Financial Services oversight.
Ripple launched RLUSD in December 2024 under an NYDFS trust charter and has since pushed the token across the XRP Ledger and Ethereum. The company has not publicly confirmed the specific rating notch, and Moody's full opinion was not available at the time of U. Today's report.
Why it matters
Stablecoins have moved more than $27 trillion in annual on-chain volume by some 2025 estimates, but the market has operated without the credit scaffolding that governs money market funds and commercial paper. A Moody's investment-grade stamp changes that overnight for one issuer. Pension funds, insurance treasuries, and bank liquidity desks typically carry mandates that require rated instruments at specific floors, and until now stablecoins have failed that first-pass screen.
RLUSD now clears it. The contrast with the rest of the market is sharp. Tether's USDT has no comparable agency rating despite its $140 billion-plus float.
