What happened
Lee Jae Myung sent a record 2027 budget to the National Assembly on Monday that sets aside 22 trillion won, about $15. 97 billion at current rates, for artificial intelligence, CryptoBriefing reported citing the Blue House filing. The allocation is the headline line item in a package Seoul is framing as a growth-and-competitiveness bet, with spending routed toward model training infrastructure, domestic chip capacity, and public-sector AI deployment.
It is the first time a South Korean administration has pushed an AI-specific figure of this size into a single fiscal year, and it lands months after Lee campaigned on closing the gap with the US and China on frontier compute. The budget still needs to clear the National Assembly, where the opposition has flagged the overall spending envelope as aggressive.
Why it matters
Seoul is one of the few jurisdictions where retail crypto flow is deep enough to move global prices on its own, and the macro backdrop in Korea feeds that pipe directly. A record AI budget pitched at lifting GDP and defending the won is the kind of signal that firms up domestic risk appetite. Lee's team is also arguing the package should support South Korea's sovereign credit rating, which matters because any downgrade risk tends to drag the won and compress the Kimchi premium that Korean traders arbitrage against offshore venues.
The headline looks bullish for sentiment. The transmission to crypto is slower and noisier than it looks.
