What happened
THORChain's node network halted swaps across all 10 connected chains on Sunday morning after an Ethereum reorg produced a 10 ETH refund that didn't reconcile with the protocol's accounting, according to Crypto. News. The reorg rewrote a short section of Ethereum's canonical chain, invalidating a previously confirmed outbound transaction and leaving the THORChain vault logic trying to refund an amount that no longer matched the on-chain state.
Node operators triggered the circuit breaker that's been in place since the 2021 incidents, pausing router activity on Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Cosmos, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Gaia, and the native THORChain layer. The halt landed in the middle of a run of transfers from wallets that chain analysts had already flagged as linked to the Binance exchange hack, per the Crypto.
News report. Those addresses had been routing proceeds through THORChain's cross-chain swap paths to break the on-chain trail into bitcoin.
Why it matters
THORChain is the largest permissionless cross-chain swap venue by TVL, and it has become the preferred laundering rail for hack proceeds precisely because it doesn't require KYC and settles directly from vault to vault. A reorg-triggered halt is a different failure mode than the exploits that hit the protocol in 2021. It isn't a solvency event.
