What happened
Yuga Labs launched Mudwater on Solana on Sunday, a trading card collection built around its Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club communities, according to CryptoBriefing. Eligibility at launch is tied to verified BAYC and MAYC wallet ownership, with the cards minted and traded on Solana rather than Ethereum. Yuga has run most of its flagship drops on Ethereum since the original Bored Ape mint in April 2021, so a product built natively on Solana for its most valuable collectors is a notable departure.
The studio framed Mudwater as a trading-card experience rather than a standalone PFP drop, which lines it up with the broader shift in NFT product design toward gameplay and collection mechanics instead of pure profile pictures. CryptoBriefing first reported the launch.
Why it matters
Blue-chip NFTs have been in a slow bleed for the better part of 2025 and into 2026. Floor prices on BAYC and MAYC spent most of the last year grinding sideways to lower while trading volume thinned out, and the collector base has drifted toward Solana, where mint costs are a rounding error and secondary liquidity has stayed thicker. Yuga meeting that collector base on Solana, rather than forcing another Ethereum drop, is a strategic concession and a growth bet rolled into one.
It also pulls ApeCoin back into the conversation. The token has traded as a proxy for Yuga ecosystem activity since its March 2022 airdrop, and any sustained bump in Mudwater throughput gives the token a fresh demand story. Whether that translates to actual token flow depends on how deeply ApeCoin is wired into Mudwater's economy, which Yuga has not fully detailed in the launch materials.
