What happened
Zama, Morpho and Steakhouse went live with a confidential DeFi yield vault on Ethereum mainnet on June 17, per CryptoBriefing. The vault is the first production deployment of Zama's fully homomorphic encryption stack on a major lending protocol. Steakhouse, the curator behind several of Morpho's largest USDC and stablecoin vaults, handles strategy selection and risk parameters. Zama's FHE layer encrypts depositor balances, allocation weights and yield accruals at the contract level, so block explorers see only opaque ciphertext for the position data. Settlement, collateral and the underlying Morpho markets stay public, which means liquidations and oracle pricing continue to operate the way every other Morpho vault does. The team framed it as a confidentiality layer bolted onto an audited lending stack, not a new chain.
The product launched with USDC as the base asset. Strategy routing pulls from Morpho's existing curated markets. Steakhouse is the sole curator at launch, with the FHE module gated behind a permissioned integration rather than open to any vault operator.
Why it matters
Confidential DeFi has been a whitepaper category for years. This is the first time the pieces are sitting on Ethereum mainnet with real depositor money and a curator who already runs nine-figure vaults. The pitch isn't retail privacy. It's the operational gap that keeps regulated funds, market makers and corporate treasuries out of transparent lending markets. When every position is public, a desk that allocates $50 million into a Morpho vault hands competitors a free read on its book. FHE closes that read while keeping the audit trail a compliance officer needs.
Morpho has been the quiet winner of the curated-vault model, with total deposits across its markets running well into the billions. Bolting a confidentiality layer onto that distribution channel, rather than launching a standalone protocol, is the more interesting design choice here. It tests whether institutions actually deploy when the privacy primitive is the only thing that changes.
