What happened
Decrypt reported on Sunday that researchers used Anthropic's Claude Opus 4. 8, the frontier model released earlier this year, to help identify a critical vulnerability in Zcash, the privacy-focused cryptocurrency built on zk-SNARK cryptography. The flaw was serious enough that experts speaking to Decrypt called it one of the biggest bugs in the protocol's history.
Decrypt did not publish the full technical details of the exploit path, consistent with responsible disclosure practice, but confirmed the bug had been triaged and patched before the public write-up. The reporting framed the episode less as a one-off finding and more as a signal: frontier AI models have crossed a threshold where they can credibly assist in surfacing the kind of deep cryptographic flaws that previously took elite human auditors weeks or months to uncover.
Anthropic's Claude was named as the assisting model. The researchers involved have not been fully identified in the public reporting, but Decrypt indicated they are part of a small group experimenting with AI-augmented audit workflows on production crypto protocols.

This is the moment auditors and protocol teams have been quietly bracing for. The crypto stack runs on code that is open by default and adversarial by design. Any wallet, exchange, or arbitrageur with a model subscription and a script can now point a frontier system at a public repo and ask it to find what the maintainers missed.
The defender's edge shrinks the moment the attacker's tooling catches up, and Decrypt's reporting makes clear that several security researchers think the asymmetry has flipped. Zcash got lucky here. The flaw was disclosed responsibly, the protocol team had time to patch, and the find made the news instead of the loss column.
