What happened
The Electric Coin Company retired zcashd on Monday, ending support for the client that shipped with Zcash's genesis block in October 2016. From this point, Zebra, the Rust-based full node ECC has been building since 2019, is the reference implementation. AMBCrypto reported the transition on Monday morning, framing it as the final infrastructure step before Ironwood, the next protocol upgrade.
zcashd was a fork of Bitcoin Core, adapted to support Zcash's zk-SNARK shielded pool. Ten years in, the codebase carried legacy dependencies that made it hard to iterate on cryptography, and ECC's engineering pitch for years has been that Zebra is smaller, easier to audit, and built to accept post-quantum primitives without a ground-up rewrite. Node operators had been on notice to migrate for months.
The shutdown is administrative rather than a hard fork - the chain keeps producing blocks - but it means anyone still running the old client is off the network.
Why it matters
Quantum resistance stopped being a hypothetical for privacy coins the moment Google, IBM, and the NIST post-quantum standards process started moving in the same direction in the mid-2020s. Zcash's shielded pool relies on zk-SNARKs whose security assumptions could, in principle, be broken by a sufficiently capable quantum computer. Ironwood is ECC's answer: swap in constructions built on hash functions and lattice assumptions that survive Shor's algorithm.
That work is easier to ship on Zebra than on a Bitcoin Core fork frozen in 2016 conventions. The headline is bullish for the Zcash thesis. The flow picture is less clear.
